In the West, there is a fairly snooty view that whisky has to be drunk neat, sitting in front of a fireplace, with a dog, ideally be-kilted. We reject this.

globally there has been a recent surge in whisky as ‘an investment’ which Can never be touched. Again, we feel this is somewhat missing the point.

We believe that whisky was made to be enjoyed - preferably with friends.

barley nectar was started in early 2022 by Alistair MacDonald, as there was an evident need for a more education-centric whisky business.
Alistair has a long background in the industry, initially working in spirits in London, before moving out to Asia in 2019. he has lectured at the Hong Kong PolyU, hosted 100s of tastings for some of the world’s biggest companies, and been featured in Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance!, and the Hong Kong Economic Times.

Alistair's family have worked in the industry since the 1820s when ‘Long John’ MacDonald established the Ben Nevis Distillery. Since then 7 different generations have worked in whisky following several booms and crashes, and amassing many a whisky soaked story.
